Shasta College is offering an exciting and unique opportunity for students who wish to attend college in Korea. Applications are now being accepted for the fall semester of 2007.  Interested students must act quickly because there only three students are accepted

In an agreement with Soonchunhyang University, Shasta College students are offered airfare reimbursement up to $800, a full scholarship, and $160 weekly living stipend. Students live on campus at no cost in the newly built international Global Village dormitory with full-time Korean students who have a special interest in English as a foreign language.

ÒThe best part about college in Korea is the opportunity to learn about new cultures, living in a foreign country is an experience that has never been learned before,Ó said Keith Brookshaw, dean of students and support programs for Shasta College.

Representatives from Soonchunhyang visited Shasta College on Feb. 12 to inform students about the unique opportunity to study abroad in Korea. Dr. Young Guan Lee, director of foreign language education and chair of Asian studies programs along with Mr. Steven Ahn, director of global exchange held an open forum to educate students about the campus, programs and services offered by university.

Soonchunhyang University in Korea is unique. They have opportunities and mandatory language classes that not only teach the student about Korea but also give the student an opportunity to explore the culture. Field trips and community service in the area is something that is common.

The duration of the program can last up to five semesters, however it is common for the international student to attend for just semester. The fall semester lasts from mid-August to mid-December and the spring semester lasts from March to mid-June. The university believes in having an equal amount of vacation time between semesters.

Foreign exchange students are paired up with Korean students on campus not only to have the opportunity to learn about the Korean culture and ways of life but also to allow Korean students an opportunity to learn about American culture.

Soonchunhyang University is located in South Korea I a rural town on the central coast. The university is surrounded by mountains and is near historical cultural attractions. The university was originally founded in 1978 as a medical college that has since been renovated to become an institution of higher education.

Soonchunhyang University offers the same majors that a four year school in the United States would offer. The lower division classes are in English and the foreign language classes are in Korean so language would not be a barrier to exploring an international education.

Students who are interested or have any questions may contact Dr. Keith Brookshaw in the Student Services office located in room 2038.
