The California Commission on Athletics
Awards Committee announced the 2006 menÕs honor roll on Feb. 27.
Allen Smith, a former Shasta College
baseball player, was among one of the students to receive the prestigious
award.
Smith is currently playing baseball for
Albilene Christian University in Texas. He is playing on a full scholarship,
rightfully deserved from his excellence on and off the field.
In a press release issued by the Athletic
department a representative said, ÒAllen exudes a work ethic that is second to
none both on and off the field and is an outstanding role model for young
athletes.Ó
Smith maintained a 3.95 GPA during his
time on the Knight team and won Golden Valley conference honors at first baseball playing seems to be a
trend in academic honors; the 2005-2006 Scholar Team awards included the Lady
Knights softball team.
The team had a group GPA of 3.21, a hard
achievement with the grueling practices each team at Shasta College faces.
The team was ranked number one out of 369
junior colleges in California and placed 11 out of the nation.
Three returning softball players are back
for another go; Sarah Jamison (pitcher), Hannah Larson (outfielder), and Amanda
Wentz (third base).
The academic performance of these talented
and dedicated athletes will be a tough act to follow for students to come as
Shasta College has many talented athletes that are focused on academic
excellence in addition to sports.
